Kashmir, currently in the frosty grip of “Chilla-i-Kalan,” is set to experience a slight change in its wintery tune. A feeble western disturbance is expected to arrive on Friday, bringing a possibility of light snowfall in the higher reaches.
While the recent dry spell has resulted in warmer days than usual, the nights remain frigid. Srinagar, the valley’s capital, recorded a minimum temperature of -4°C, slightly warmer than the previous night. Other towns like Qazigund, Gulmarg, and Pahalgam also saw temperatures dipping below freezing.
This upcoming western disturbance, followed by another on January 17th, offers hope for some snowfall, which has been scarce in the plains and less than usual in the higher reaches.
Though the snowfall might be light, it’s a welcome change after the prolonged dry spell. December witnessed a 79% rain deficit, and the first week of January remained completely dry. This lack of snowfall has caused concerns for water availability and agricultural activities.
While “Chilla-i-Kalan” ends on January 31st, the cold wave continues with a 20-day “Chilla-i-Khurd” and a 10-day “Chilla-i-Bachha.” Until then, Kashmiris can prepare for a continuation of chilly nights and hope for the promised sprinkle of winter magic in the higher reaches.
