A man from West Bengal was arrested in Srinagar on Thursday with a pistol that he had stolen from a house.
The man, identified as Lokesh Kumar, is a native of Alipurduar in West Bengal. He is currently living in the Elahi Bagh Soura area of Srinagar.
Kumar was arrested at a joint naka (checkpoint) at Regal chowk in the early hours of the day. Police said that he had stolen the licensed pistol earlier in the night from a house in Srinagar.
An FIR (First Information Report) has been registered at the Kothibagh police station.
Police said that Kumar is being questioned and further investigation is underway.
The arrest comes as a major success for the Srinagar police, who have been cracking down on the illegal possession of firearms in the city.
In recent months, the police have arrested several people for possessing illegal weapons. In one case, the police arrested a man who was carrying a pistol in a school bag.
