Following the season’s first snowfall in the Kashmir Valley, temperatures plummeted significantly on Friday. The meteorological department has issued a cold wave warning for the next four days, with frigid conditions expected across many areas.
Srinagar, the summer capital, recorded a minimum temperature of -2°C, a sharp drop from the previous night’s -0.5°C. Gulmarg, a renowned ski resort, experienced the coldest night of the season with a bone-chilling -9.6°C. Pahalgam, the base camp for the Amarnath Yatra, also saw a drastic drop in temperature, reaching a frigid -9.4°C.
Other parts of the valley, including Qazigund, Kupwara, and Kokernag, also recorded sub-zero temperatures.
Higher reaches, including popular tourist destinations like Gulmarg, Sonamarg, Gurez, and the Zojila axis, witnessed light to moderate snowfall on Thursday. Some plains in Shopian, Pulwama, and Baramulla also received snowfall.
While the weather is expected to remain dry until December 21, the meteorological department has warned of a significant drop in minimum temperatures, leading to a cold wave across many parts of the valley.
