Despite remaining a challenge for security forces, Jammu and Kashmir’s Director General of Police, R R Swain, asserts that the overall security situation in the Union Territory is under control. He emphasized this point at a Public Grievances Redressal Programme in Awantipora, highlighting the success in maintaining public order.
However, Swain acknowledges the ongoing issue of cross-border infiltration, with militants entering the region and attempting to disrupt peace. He views this as a complex challenge, but one that is mitigated by the continued support of the local population.
“A majority of the public is not with them,” Swain stated, emphasizing the low number of locals joining the militants. This, he believes, is a key indicator of the improving security situation.
Furthermore, the DGP pinpointed the external origins of much of the violence, stating that “about 90% of the problem comes from outside.” He described the infiltration of militants from Pakistan, through both traditional means and clandestine tunnels, as a significant challenge despite their reduced numbers.
Expressing optimism for the future, Swain expressed hope that the security situation will continue to improve with the increasing cooperation of the locals. He believes that eventually, the people themselves will help to address the issue of infiltration.
